Bodie Mine - Good Samaritan Remediation of Abandoned Hardrock Mines ActDocument Number
N2026154Document Type
EA/FONSIProject Description
The EPA is the lead federal agency responsible for ensuring compliance with NEPA for the proposed cleanup of Bodie Mine in Okanogan County, Washington. The Project Proponent is Trout Unlimited, Inc. Funding for this project is being provided through EPA's Good Samaritan Remediation of Hardrock Mines Act of 2024. The project site is the former location of the Bodie Mine in Okanogan County, Washington. The site currently consists of an inactive and abandoned mine, including abandoned mine features in the form of historic tailings/waste rock and disturbed lands on private land owned by one landowner. A portion of Toroda Creek runs through the project site and is currently being impacted by the erosion of contaminated tailings that this project proposes to remediate. Under the proposed action, EPA funding would support the excavation of mine tailings, stabilization of the bank, and revegetation of the disturbed area as well as transportation of any contaminated material to the appropriate landfills. The project involves armoring and reconstruction of the east bank, installation of erosion and sediment controls through dewatering processes, placement of riprap, clean native fill for soil lifts, incorporation of approved biochar/compost amendments to 2-6 inches in disturbed soils, and installation of 300-400 native plants, native seed mixes, and wildlife exclusion fencing. Existing access routes and staging areas will be utilized. Applicable materials would be stockpiled, characterized, and transported to an appropriate off-site landfill. All cleanup and restoration activities would remain within previously disturbed areas and comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations under the Good Samaritan Act.EPA Region/Headquarters Office
