Project Description

This project intends to address the long-term water security of Garden City stabilize their declining groundwater supply. The project is divided into two phases. In Phase 1, non-potable water will be rerouted to agricultural fields for irrigation. In Phase 2, the City will implement a Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) system to facilitate indirect potable reuse of wastewater. During Phase 1, treated effluent from the City’s wastewater treatment plant will be combined with effluent from the Dairy Farmers of America’s local milk drying facility and conveyed to an irrigation user located northwest of the City’s Sandhill potable wellfield. Major components associated with this phase include pump stations, a new water storage facility, and new pipeline to convey the treated effluent. During Phase 2, infiltration basins will be constructed to facilitate aquafer recharge. These basins will be located within the Sandsage Bison Range Wildlife Area. Planning for this phase in still ongoing, but expected infrastructure needs associated with the recharge basin include a new pipeline to convey treated effluent and pump stations.
