Title
Empowering Disadvantaged Communities in Urban and Rural Utah through Community Engaged Air Pollution Monitoring and MitigationDocument Number
N2024245Document Type
EA/FONSIProject Description
Utah Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will address indoor air pollution inequities in underserved urban, rural, and tribal communities through radon testing, remediation, and mitigation. Radon is estimated to cause tens of thousands of lung cancer deaths each year. Due to the health risk and health hazard from high radon levels in indoor air, the need to start testing and mitigating for radon in dwellings needs to occur sooner rather than later. EPA has waived the 30-calendar day comment period due to the health risk that high levels of indoor radon pose in these disadvantaged communities. The deviation is required for the processing of grant funds to the Utah DEQ in a timely manner. This will enable the Utah DEQ to address a health risk to its residents in disadvantaged communities from exposure to high levels of radon that causes lung cancer.EPA Region/Headquarters Office
